Paver walkway installation along a residential property

Connecting spaces with stone and pavers

Walkways, steps, and stonework are the elements that tie a property together. A well-built path guides people through your landscape. Stone steps handle grade changes safely. Veneer and accent stone elevate the look of walls, columns, and outdoor features.

We install paver walkways, flagstone and stepping stone paths, stone and paver steps, stone veneer, and decorative boulder features for homeowners across the Roanoke Valley. Every project starts with the same basics — proper excavation, a compacted base, and the right materials for the application. The result is stonework that looks intentional and stays put.

What this service covers

From front walkways to decorative boulder placement, here's the full scope of walkway and stonework services we provide.

Paver Walkways

Interlocking paver walkways for front entries, side yards, and garden paths. Built on a proper aggregate base with edge restraint and polymeric sand joints.

Flagstone & Stepping Stone Paths

Natural flagstone and stepping stone paths set in gravel, ground cover, or mortar. A more relaxed, organic look for garden areas and secondary pathways.

Stone & Paver Steps

Steps built from natural stone treads, paver units, or block to handle grade changes between patios, walkways, yards, and entry areas. Properly footed and pitched for drainage and safety.

Stone Veneer & Decorative Stonework

Natural and manufactured stone veneer applied to wall faces, columns, fire features, and outdoor kitchen surrounds. Adds a finished, high-end look to hardscape structures.

Boulder Placement

Large decorative boulders placed for landscape accents, erosion control, and property borders. We use equipment to position boulders exactly where you want them — set naturally, not just dropped.

How we approach walkway and stonework projects

Whether it's a 50-foot paver walkway or a set of natural stone steps, the process stays consistent.

01

Layout & material selection

We review the areas to be connected, discuss material options, and map out the path layout and step locations. You'll know exactly what you're getting before work begins.

02

Excavation & base preparation

Paths are excavated to the correct depth, aggregate base is placed in lifts and compacted, and grade is established for surface drainage.

03

Stone & paver installation

Material is placed according to the layout — pavers cut and fit, flagstone selected and set, steps positioned and leveled. Joints are filled and edges restrained.

04

Finishing & site cleanup

Edges are backfilled, adjacent areas are restored, and the entire work area is cleaned. You walk the finished project with us to confirm everything looks right.

Walkway & stonework questions

What's the best material for a front walkway? +

For most homes, interlocking concrete pavers are the best all-around choice. They're durable, available in many styles, and individual units can be replaced if needed. Flagstone and bluestone offer a more natural look and work especially well with traditional or rustic home styles. We'll recommend materials based on your home's architecture and your budget.

How wide should a walkway be? +

A primary walkway — like the path from your driveway to your front door — should be at least 4 feet wide so two people can walk side by side comfortably. Secondary paths through gardens or side yards can be 2–3 feet wide. We'll help you decide based on how the path will be used.

Do stone steps need a concrete footing? +

It depends on the design and height. Short runs of natural stone steps on grade often sit on a compacted aggregate base without concrete. Taller step structures, especially those integrated with retaining walls, may benefit from a poured concrete footing for long-term stability. We evaluate each situation and build what's appropriate.

Can you match new stonework to my existing hardscape? +

In most cases, yes. If your existing pavers or stone are still available from the manufacturer, we can source the same product. Even when an exact match isn't possible, we can select complementary materials that blend well. We'll bring samples to your property so you can see how they look together before committing.

How long do paver walkways last? +

A properly installed paver walkway will last 25 years or more. The key is the base — adequate excavation, compacted aggregate, and proper drainage keep pavers from settling or shifting. Unlike poured concrete, pavers flex with minor ground movement instead of cracking, and individual units can be replaced without tearing out the whole path.
